The Smiths Reuniting? Don't Get Your Hopes Up
Various news sites such as Holy Moly! are reporting that The Smiths will be reuniting in 2013 for four UK shows, including Glastonbury. What's the source for the current hysteria? On September 27, Australia's Herald Sun uncovered this tidbit in an email interview with Morrissey:
At Coachella a few years you complained about the waft of burning flesh from a nearby barbeque. Has that been a problem since at outdoor shows? The burning flesh incident in question occurred during his 2009 Coachella main stage performance. So, "the following year" would be 2010. Goldenvoice offered to go meat-free in 2010 for Morrissey and Marr to reunite with the rhythm section of their choice, and this offer clearly was not accepted. Thanks to the purple monkey dishwasher phenomenon, "the following year" seems to have been taken out of context and converted into "next year." In short, he's talking about a previous offer, and thanks to a lack of research and reading comprehension all around, your facebook and twitter feeds are now flooded with reunion "confirmations". As if Glastonbury tickets weren't already a challenge to reserve...
Not at all, and interestingly the agents for Coachella offered a 100-per-cent vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as the Smiths. Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would 'not require' the Smiths' bass player or drummer ... which I thought certainly said something.

Ultimate Fan Setlists: System of a Down
If given the improbable task of curating a setlist for a favorite artist, what would you choose? What would your approach be. Recently, I asked myself these questions for Radiohead and Asobi Seksu. For the third installment of Ultimate Fan Setlists, System of a Down fan Jeff Cunningham intimated his choices to Simply Fuss Free. In addition to the songs he holds near and dear, he also shared his rationale.

Ultimate Fan Setlists: Asobi Seksu
Recently, Pearl Jam had a fan pick the setlist for one of their gigs. Bands such as The Flaming Lips and R.E.M. have taken requests online in the past, as well. What would you do if given such a golden opportunity? For a hypothetical dream set from Radiohead, Simply Fuss Free opted for b-sides and other unplayed rarities. What about something completely different? For example, how about venturing out of the arena and into the club for someone like Asobi Seksu?
According to fellow fan Mohamed El Amin, his number one wish for seeing them live is "Definitely 'Stay Awake.' I want to sing/dance/walk/sleep/fuck/a billion other things to that song." Well said. Possibly the band's most breathtaking moment, "Stay Awake" was released back in 2007 as a limited edition 7", but is still available digitally on iTunes, Amazon, and as part of Adult Swim's Warm & Scratchy compilation. For this installment of Ultimate Fan Setlists, Simply Fuss Free has attempted to strike balance between old and new, drawing from all eras, and incorporating some of their outstanding b-sides.

Ultimate Fan Setlists: Radiohead
Recently, Pearl Jam gave a longtime fan the opportunity of a lifetime by flying him from Rhode Island to attend a couple gigs in Amsterdam and giving him the privilege of creating the second night's setlist. Read more about it at Stereogum. If your favorite band entrusted you with such a task, what would you choose? All the hits? All obscurities? What about new material? I asked myself these same questions and have come up with different results for different bands. and for the first installment in this new series, it's all about living in cloud cuckoo land. After all, what other band can compare to Radiohead when it comes to stellar b-sides and long-abandoned pieces of perfection?
Read below for Simply Fuss Free's dream Radiohead setlist.

New Bat for Lashes Songs Debut in Cambridge
Ever have one of those moments where all the magic that a festival has to offer comes together in such a way that it makes all the hardship okay to the point where you declare that you must return next year? For my first Coachella, this happened during the Pixies' big comeback while the sun went down in the massive desert sky. Glastonbury had at least a dozen such moments, but one of the best was witnessing Bat for Lashes captivate the crowd on a muggy Sunday afternoon. It's been over three years since Two Suns, but today Natasha Khan's formal return has been made official. The Haunted Man, Bat for Lashes' third album finally surfaces on October 15, and driving the point home yet again that American festivals will never be as good as their European counterparts, she will be touring that circuit this summer before a fall UK tour. Nothing is currently official or even rumored for the colonies at this time, but she is long overdue to play Coachella. Too soon?
